Destination Montana: Flathead Lake and West Glacier

We spent two weeks in Montana, one at the southern tip of Flathead Lake in Polson and one in West Glacier, just outside the western gate of Glacier National Park.

In both areas, the trails and streams found on Indian reservations, including GNP, were closed to tourists so no hiking, fishing, off roading, etc.  Lesson learned: contact the local visitor center in advance to understand closures and delays due to COVID, forest fire, construction, and so forth.

In Polson, we stayed at the Polson Motorcoach Resort and found it to be a fun location to see the tip of Flathead Lake and to watch the airplanes land and takeoff at the small adjacent airport.

At Glacier National Park, we stayed at the new( in 2019) West Glacier RV Park.  We liked the the close proximity(.25 mile) to the west gate of the park.  There is a train track near the park so earplugs are a good option for a sound sleep.  To avoid crowds, we ended up heading out to popular park destinations pretty early.

In both locations, we spent a lot of time hiking, taking the Jeep off-roading and where possible, we went fly fishing.  Brian is much better than me, and my cast is coming a long.

We visited the quaint little town of Whitefish a couple times and enjoyed the restaurants and shops there.

We found Polson and West Glacier simply amazing.

  2. Hi Betty, It is so good to see you are out and about again! We love Glacier–so beautiful! Are you thinking of heading to the southwest again next winter? We’ve reserved in Sedona again in January. It would be great fun to see you there again!
