Destination: Big Horn National Forest, Wyoming

Meet us in Tie Flume our friends said, so we did, happily. We spent 6 days dry camping (no electrical or water hookup) in the Big Rig. It was our first time dry camping in the rig and we did just fine, driving away with a good understanding of how much water & electricity we use and how the generator really works on the rig. There was no cellular service so we were truly off the grid. Go team Johnson.

The Tie Flume campground found in the Big Horn National Forest was lovely with about 20 sites and a river running along side it. There was a water well pump that reminded me of the camping I did as a Girl Scout. The wild life seemed to be chased off by the forest fire smoke and we saw very few animals. We saw a single grizzly bear when we came down the mountain to return the UTV, simply thrilling. We wore some bright clothes when trail riding as bow hunting season for Elk had begun.

Our friends have much experience and were wonderful at showing us the ropes when it comes to driving ATVs and UTVs and we had a blast. We drove through rivers, creeks, mud ponds, herds of cattle, skinny trails, flat trails, boulder trails and so on. Brian loved driving the UTV we rented. I loved being his passenger. We returned to camp each day caked in dust and mud. Adam and John were excellent consultants when it came to picking a “line” to travel through tricky boulder trails and water hazards. I can honestly say we are the only people we know that caught a brook trout with their UTV when crossing a river. Unfortunately, it was only 3 inches long so we threw it back and had a good laugh.

Thanks to our friends Lisa, John and Adam for sharing their fun with us. We made great memories.

Cheers from the Big Horns,

Betty and Brian
