Escapade: Bighorn Mountains, Wyoming

The Tie Flume campground is located in the Bighorn National Forest near Burgess Junction in northern Wyoming. The elevation is about 8,400 ft. The area is great for camping, hiking, hunting and has loads of great off-road vehicle trails.

We took two days to travel to and two days to travel from Tie Flume in the Big Rig, towing the Jeep. We stayed at KOA campgrounds coming and going and found them to be consistently good and reliable.

We spent the week riding trails with our friends John and Lisa.

John and Lisa brought their Can-AM and we rented a RAZR UTV(Utility Terrain Vehicle). So.Much.Fun. We packed a lunch each day and set off to ride through streams, climb up and down bolder covered trails, through herds of cattle and flocks of sheep and across mountain ridges. Every trail had its own flavor and feature. We ended each day caked in dust with huge smiles on our faces and grit in our ears and eyes.

We saw very few animals other than sheep, cattle and deer. Moose and elk are common but likely scared away by hunters or had perhaps migrated down the mountains for warmer climate.

We took a day-trip down the mountain to visit the town of Sheridan and nibble on the fabulous baked goods and sammies at the Innominate Coffeehouse & Bakery in Ranchester.

Our camp sites were without water/electrical hookups and we relied on the generator and water we brought in. Showers were short and cooking was creative. The camp was scenic with a nearby stream and starry skies at night.

That’s a wrap from the road. Cheers to you and yours,

Brian and Betty
