August 2024
We set off from South Haven for a week aboard Reef Diver, boating to some of our favorite harbors on the western coast of Michigan’s lower peninsula.
Our plan was to boat to Ludington (approx. 136 nautical miles/four hours) for three nights, Frankfort(approx. 55 nautical miles/ two hours) for one night and Leland/Fishtown(approx. 40 nautical miles/ one and one half hours) for two nights and back to Ludington for one night on the way home. The weather and waves were on our side and our itinerary went off without a hitch. The return trip went faster as we were mostly with the waves. Additionally, Phoebe is officially a sea dog now, though she really prefers land.
Ludington is our new favorite harbor. We docked at Harbor View Marina, well equipped with a nice clubhouse and pool, overlooking the dock for the Badger and the Harbor View Park. We enjoyed watching the Badger, an historic coal-fired steamer that ferries from Michigan to Wisconsin daily. We also had good seats on our boat to listen to two concerts at the Harbor View Park: Mega 80’s on Saturday and Jazz on Wednesday. Cluck Bucket has the best Rolled pretzels and we went back for seconds. We met some CMU parents, always a welcome acquaintance (see the Fishin Chips boat). Go Chips!
We always enjoy Frankfort and docked at Jacobsons Marina. The fisher people here and at Ludington were reeling in the most salmon we have seen in a while.
Time in Leland/Fishtown, docked at the Leland Municipal Marina, is so peaceful. We love the waterfalls and viewing the classic fishing tugs.
We spent our time taking walks, reading, meeting other boaters, and socializing Phoebe at the dog friendly shops and restaurants. In a word, this trip was relaxing and we always enjoy coming home.
Cheers to you from home, sweet South Haven, home,
Brian and Betty
