January 2026

Maui is known as “The Valley Isle” for its stunning beaches, diverse landscapes of volcanoes, rainforests and waterfalls and also for being one of the best locations in the world for watching humpback whales.
We based ourselves in the stunning area of Wailea, a perfect hub for both relaxation and adventure. Between watching majestic humpback whales and navigating the legendary Road to Hana, it was a trip filled with amazing memories.
We enjoyed walking the scenic Wailea Beach Path, accessible from our hotel front. This paved oceanfront trail connects several beaches and resorts, providing breathtaking views of the ocean, especially at sunrise or sunset.
Visiting during the peak season (typically December through April) meant the waters were alive with humpback whales and calves . It was a truly awe-inspiring spectacle. I was delighted to finally see and capture on film many whale breaches. From the beach we could often see numerous in the distance, a perfect excuse to slow down and simply watch. We also enjoyed boat tours to see the gentle giants up close and hear their songs by hydrophone.

The Road to Hana is less a drive and more a full-day journey. With over 600 curves and 50+ one-lane bridges, it’s an adventure that demands your full attention (and a full tank of gas!). We stopped along the way for lunch at a food truck park and at the Hana Gold Cacao Plantation for fresh made chocolate treats.

Leisure & Play: Golf, Tennis, and Reading by the Sea
Our trip wasn’t all high adventure. Wailea also provided the perfect setting for some relaxation and recreation.
- Golfing: Brian had the good luck to golf the Wailea Gold and Emerald courses with stunning ocean views at every turn. The highlight was golfing the Kapalua course.
- Tennis: While Brian golfed, I had fun playing tennis at the Wailea Tennis Center, a 5 minute walk from our resort. It’s a fantastic great facility that welcomes visitors with clinics and play.
- Reading & Unwinding: One of my favorite, most simple pleasures was finding a quiet spot by the pool to read a book and watch the whales breach, slap fins and flap fins.
Our Maui trip was the perfect blend of adventure and downtime. Wailea provided a beautiful backdrop to some truly incredible experiences.
Until next time, Maui
